Mr. Wesley G arrived at The Pearl on a sunny Saturday afternoon, November 1, 2025, determined to make progress. He just spent a short stay at Memorial East Hospital after falling at home and hitting his head. Wesley was diagnosed with syncope and collapse. With a great concern for this unexpected diagnosis and the fear of fainting with no warning, he knew this experience would be overwhelming, but he was determined to do whatever it took to get back to his life. His life may have changed somewhat after he fell, but with Mr. G’s motivation, it didn’t take much time at all to see the results.
In Wesley’s first few days, he was very overwhelmed by all the changes he would be making. “Having no exposure to this type of therapy in a skilled nursing environment, it was daunting. Mr. G stated,” One thing I learned is that getting a “no” doesn’t mean it’s a permanent no. You just need to keep searching until you get a maybe or a yes.” Mr. G had a roommate at the beginning of his stay, who had many challenges. He motivated Wesley to ensure he would embrace these obstacles and move forward in his therapy. Along with the therapy team, Wesley set goals to complete during his stay, including walking 250 feet with an assistive device, transferring independently, and improving his ability to safely perform personal hygiene tasks.
In only three short weeks, Wesley progressed from being able to walk 50 feet with a device and supervision, to being able to walk 250 feet with a device and only setup assistance. He also went from being able to transfer in and out of bed with maximal assistance to being able to transfer with only setup assistance, and finally, he went from needing partial assistance with personal hygiene tasks to also only needing setup assistance. “Bo and Markensen, my therapists, are always so motivational. They’re great at diagnosing where you are and what you need, and they always push you to get there,” he explained. Mr. G stayed focused on working hard and was able to make progress every day.
Wesley will be discharged home on January 2nd, and he couldn’t be more thrilled. “I am very excited to go home, but there are truly so many amazing staff members that I have grown close to and will miss dearly. Soria at the front desk and Lorena, the concierge, are super warm and attentive to everyone’s needs. They are truly a pleasure to be around! After a person stays here, they will truly appreciate what people go through in life. This is a great place to stay, and you always come out learning a lot,” Wesley said. This experience may have been overwhelming to start for Mr. G, but he quickly made progress and was able to chase the light at the end of the tunnel. We have the utmost faith in Wesley that he will accomplish anything he puts his mind to; we just hope that he will come back to visit.
